Smoking Culture at McMurdo Station

This is the abstract for “Smoking Culture at Antarctica‚Äôs McMurdo Station”, a poster I recently presented at the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) annual conference in Dallas, Texas. This research was an outgrowth of the work I did on the ‚ÄúCulture and Health in Antarctica‚Äù project with Tim Dye, Ann Dozier, Nancy Chin, Peter Fleming, and Kathryn Donhauser.

Public Health Practice, 2002 in Review Poster

This is a poster I created to photographically summarize the activities of the University of Rochester’s Division of Public Health Practice for 2002. While I was quite pleased with the final product, the loss of the original source files for this project was a tragic first lesson in proper backup planning.

McMurdo Station, Ross Island, Antarctica

Here are some of the photos I took while working on the NSF “Culture and Health in Antarctica” grant for the University of Rochester’s Division of Public Health Practice.¬†With roughly 1,200 inhabitants at the busiest time of year, McMurdo Station is the largest base and the primary re-supply point for most of the continent.

Cargo Night Crew

During my time at McMurdo Station I had the good fortune to be adopted by the excellent members of Team Merkin (def.); one of two groups of night shift workers managing the flow of cargo through the base.
